Description and curator notes
Nivedita's recollections of Vivekananda combine personal observations, recorded conversations and accounts of travels with thematic chapters about his religious teaching. The chapter on the worship of the Mother is directly relevant to Kali: it discusses his relationship with Kali devotion, the connection with Ramakrishna, the interpretation of the terrible aspect of divinity, and Nivedita's own presentation of the subject. The book preserves tensions and developments within a disciple's experience rather than offering a systematic history of Shaktism. Its final appendix reproduces fragmentary notes attributed to Miss Waldo on “Worship of the Divine Mother,” including reflections on love, good and evil, and surrender. Reading this material within the complete memoir helps distinguish Nivedita's narrative voice, quotations attributed to Vivekananda and appended notes by another hearer. It is an important companion to Kali the Mother for understanding the Ramakrishna–Vivekananda movement's English-language interpretation of the goddess. The publicly accessible edition supplies the complete table of contents, twenty-seven chapters and four appendices.
