Description and curator notes

Investigates relationships among sculpted deity images, Kali devotees, and religious specialists in a Hindu temple in western Guyana. The article describes rituals addressed to murtis and the manifestation of deities in human bodies, asking how the presence of images affects the people who care for and worship them. Its emphasis on bodily experience and the interaction of persons and things offers a detailed alternative to treating sacred images as merely illustrative symbols. For a Kali library, the study provides substantial documentation of diaspora ritual life, material religion, and the ways devotees understand divine presence in both images and persons.
