Description and curator notes
Uses ethnographic encounters among Kali devotees, religious specialists, Hindu deities, and spirits associated with colonizers in Guyana to examine religious doubt and power. Rather than treating spiritual possession as an unquestioned system of belief, Mello follows uncertainty, tests of authenticity, and retrospective explanations of events. The argument pays particular attention to how different beings may imitate or assume the attributes and powers of others. This makes the article useful for understanding Kali worship in a Caribbean setting shaped by colonial histories, migration, and relations among communities. It complements, rather than duplicates, the author’s separate studies of sacrifice and sacred images.
