Description and curator notes
Examines the narrative architecture of the Bhadrakāḷīmāhātmya, a regional Sanskrit Purāṇa associated with Kerala. Rather than isolating the goddess’s battle against Dārika, van Brussel follows recurring sequences of violence, endings, and renewed beginnings through the text. The study treats these cycles as a structural principle that connects apparently separate episodes and illuminates Bhadrakāḷī’s place within wider Purāṇic cosmology. It is particularly useful for studying the relationship between a locally worshipped goddess and pan-Indian theological patterns. Readers should distinguish the article’s modern interpretation from the date and transmission of the underlying regional text.
