Description and curator notes

Develops an embodied approach to the Hindu Divine Mother, with particular attention to the troubling or terrifying dimensions of Kali. Burley asks how philosophical discussion changes when divine motherhood is understood through lived bodies, emotional responses, and the turbulent world rather than reduced to an abstract attribute of deity. The article considers religious responses to terror and suffering, and examines the significance of reverence for a mother who can also destroy. It offers a careful philosophical framework for Kali studies while drawing on existing religious and textual interpretations rather than presenting new temple ethnography.
