Description and curator notes
Reads the Newar Kumari tradition through ritual and performance theory, considering how the selection and public recognition of a living goddess produce cultural meaning. The article discusses traditions concerning Taleju, the relationship between Hindu and Buddhist worship, and contemporary debates about heritage, monarchy, and the position of the girls who serve as Kumari. It is included as contextual scholarship for the name Kumari rather than as a direct study of Kali’s theology. Read beside Ghimire’s article, it shows how shared goddess identifications coexist with locally specific institutions and practices that cannot be reduced to a single pan-Indian goddess identity.
