Description and curator notes
Studies vows and elaborate offerings in popular South Indian Hinduism through the ritual theatre Muṭiyēṯṯu and its relationship with Bhadrakāḷī. The article asks how devotees understand the efficacy of an expensive, publicly visible performance that may fulfill an intensely personal promise. Attention to what the goddess knows, what worshippers disclose, and what spectators can infer shows how private devotion and communal spectacle intersect. This is a substantial source for the lived religious economy of Bhadrakali worship, including the language of vows, the circumstances of commissioned performances, and the agency attributed to the goddess.
