Description and curator notes

This collection of Nivedita's essays places religious observance within the households, neighborhoods, pilgrimages and seasonal life of India. The essay “The Sacred Year” describes the progression of Bengali festivals and includes Kali Puja, the lamps associated with it and the emotions surrounding the Mother's arrival and departure. Other essays concern Durga Puja, Gopaler Ma, pilgrimage and domestic religious life. Its value for a Kali library is consequently contextual: it records a participant observer's interpretation of the lived environment in which Mother worship took place. The collection's final meditation, “The Ship of Flowers,” develops the imagery of religious offering and prayer. This complete volume helps readers compare Nivedita's more specifically theological Kali the Mother with her accounts of festivals and ordinary devotion. It is an early twentieth-century literary and religious witness, whose generalizations about Indian life should be identified as the author's interpretations.
