Description and curator notes
This essay introduces Kalighat painting through religious pilgrimage, popular imagery, and the social world of colonial Kolkata. It discusses how the painters’ subjects moved between divine figures and satire of human behavior. The article offers an interpretive setting for the museum’s Kali paintings and helps prevent their treatment as isolated illustrations. Its magazine issue date is July–August 2011; the website posting date is 26 July 2016.
