Description and curator notes

Examines the symbolic relationship between Kali, Kolkata, and Mother Teresa through the idea of a metropolis represented as having two mothers. The essay follows literary images of the city, the Kalighat temple, and Western accounts of Kali, then brings Jungian interpretations of a double mother into dialogue with representations of Mother Teresa’s work near Kalighat. Its value lies in tracing the cultural interpretation of the goddess and the city across religious and literary settings. The author’s psychological framework and claims about early origins are interpretations to evaluate, rather than a substitute for philological dating or temple history.
