Description and curator notes
Müller's book combines discussion of Indian religious teachers and traditions with a biography of Ramakrishna and a numbered collection of 395 sayings. The life narrative describes the Kali temple at Dakshineswar, Ramakrishna's family and early religious setting, his service as a priest and his intense devotional experiences. The sayings repeatedly use concrete images from domestic life, nature and religious practice to explain faith, spiritual experience, the divine and liberation. These materials are useful for tracing the presentation of a Bengali Kali devotee to an English-reading public at the end of the nineteenth century, and for comparing that presentation with the more extensive Gospel tradition. The book should be treated as Müller's historical compilation and interpretation, rather than as a verbatim contemporary transcript of every event or saying. Its own biographical notes acknowledge inaccuracies in early reports, which makes careful attribution especially necessary. The free edition includes the complete introductory material, life, all numbered sayings and index. The final paired sayings, 394–395, use the tadpole losing its tail to describe freedom from ignorance and the ability to live both in God and in the world.
