Description and curator notes

This official collected volume contains the complete six-chapter book The Mother, letters on the Mother and Sri Aurobindo's translations of selected prayers and meditations. The publisher states that all six chapters of The Mother were written in 1927 and first collected in 1928; the accompanying letters date from 1927 to 1950. Chapter VI presents four leading powers or personalities of the Divine Mother: Maheshwari, Mahakali, Mahalakshmi and Mahasaraswati. Its Mahakali passage emphasizes force, swiftness, courage, the overthrow of obstruction and transformative discipline. Later letters distinguish Mahakali and Kali, discuss Durga and other forms and explain how these names function in Sri Aurobindo's Integral Yoga. These statements are important modern theological sources, with terminology and claims particular to that tradition. References to the Mother may concern the universal Divine Mother, her transcendent aspect or the individual spiritual collaborator known as the Mother; the volume itself explores those distinctions. The authorized PDF retains the complete collection, contents and editorial note on the texts, enabling readers to identify the provenance of individual passages. It is suitable as a link to an authorized free reading copy; the edition carries the Ashram Trust's copyright notice.
