Description and curator notes

Dexter and Mair compare female display figures across several Eurasian traditions, revisiting material discussed in their earlier book. A dedicated Kali section on printed pages 21–22 examines protective and destructive functions, dancing postures, cremation-ground associations and passages from the Devi Mahatmya. An extensive illustrated section reproduces related objects, including representations of Kali, with captions and source references. For a Kali library, the work is most useful as a documented example of comparative iconographic interpretation and as a route to its cited objects and scholarship. It is not a Kali-only monograph. The proposed connections between prehistoric female figures and later goddesses are interpretive hypotheses, not proof of a continuous prehistoric Kali cult. Readers should also distinguish the authors’ broad Great Goddess framing from the specific identities and historical contexts of individual traditions. The complete study is freely available from its publisher; this catalog links it without granting reuse rights to its many third-party images.
