Description and curator notes

Burley compares the poetry of Ramprasad Sen and R. S. Thomas to argue for a broader philosophy of religion attentive to devotional protest. Rather than treating reproach of a deity as a simple rejection of faith, the article examines how accusation, dependence, doubt, and devotion coexist. Its substantial Ramprasad section explores Kali’s maternal and frightening dimensions and the poet’s complaints about poverty, suffering, and apparent divine indifference. It also explains why attribution requires caution: the corpus associated with Ramprasad developed through oral circulation, variant versions, and later edited collections, and cannot automatically be assigned to a single historical author. The study is useful both as modern interpretation and as a bibliographic route into Bengali devotional scholarship. Its comparative framework should be distinguished from the primary poems themselves, and the article does not settle their individual textual histories. The repository supplies the complete published article, including references, allowing readers to follow its arguments and citations without payment.
