Description and curator notes
Hollo’s Finnish anthology opens with Uhri, the translation of Tagore’s Sacrifice, before presenting six further dramas. The first play makes Kali worship the setting for a dispute between a king who rejects animal sacrifice and a priest who insists on its authority. The dialogue names Kali as Mother and Mahakali as the goddess of time, while the plot examines obedience, love and the use of divine command to justify violence. The Finnish version broadens research beyond English and documents the European-language circulation of a Bengali writer’s reinterpretation of the goddess. The entire anthology is accessible, but its acceptance here rests on the substantial, complete Kali-centered first play; the remaining dramas should not be presented as Kali-specific works. This edition is suitable for comparative translation and modern reception studies, rather than for reconstructing ancient doctrine or actual Tripura ritual.
