Description and curator notes

Mello studies how members of Kali-worshipping communities in coastal Guyana experience colonial history through bodies, spirits and divine manifestations. Drawing on fieldwork in Berbice and a later return visit, he follows accounts of Dutch spirits, temple rebuilding and interactions between devotees and deities. Rather than reducing spirit narratives to symbols of past violence, the article examines the practices through which people recognize historical presences and negotiate their effects. Its discussion of divine form also considers Mariamma, bodily manifestation and sacred plants within this particular Kali-worship tradition. The analysis expands the library’s diaspora coverage while showing why Caribbean Kali worship cannot simply be treated as an unchanged transplant from India. This is a distinct later study of embodied history and relational forms, not a duplicate of the author’s earlier article on sacrifice.
